The driver who was killed when his car smashed into the central reservation of a busy bypass on Monday morning has been named as a West Yorkshire Police sergeant.
David Heptinstall, 41, of Crigglestone, a detective sergeant in the crime division, was driving a VW Golf along the A650 Wrenthorpe Bypass in Wakefield towards J41 of the M1 when it left the carriageway and crashed around 7.55am.
Mr Heptinstall was taken to Pinderfields Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He joined West Yorkshire Police in 1990 and served in the Huddersfield and Wakefield areas before joining the crime division.
