TANGIER, Morocco - The waiter in the comically ill-fitting white jacket greeted me warmly. "Marhaba. Bienvenu. Welcome," he repeated in three languages, vaguely remembering my face, but not where I was from.
The balmy evening had drawn a curtain of lassitude across the Socco Chico, a little square in the center of the Tangier's old market. The guidebooks say it is inadvisable to venture into the serpentine alleyways leading to the square at night - obviously making it the ideal time to go.
