NEW YORK - The name Ralph Lauren, long synonymous with luxury, is about to appear on clothing priced substantially below the bridge and designer tiers that are its usual levels.
If Lauren, whose reputation was made with good taste, good quality and the approach of a perfectionist, is concerned that becoming more accessible might dilute his image, he doesn't show it.
"I think I'm adding value," said the designer, reflecting on his decision to move into the better-price sportswear market via a licensing deal with Jones Apparel Group.
As far as retailers are concerned, the new Lauren by Ralph Lauren line is a potential gold mine.
