Retired, inactive, in-house lawyers can now represent clients pro bono: effective July 1, new Supreme Court rules let retired, inactive, and in-house lawyers working through legal-aid providers or other approved groups represent clients pro bono.(Illinois)

With modifications to SCR 716 and SCR 756(j), the Illinois Supreme Court has made it easier for more lawyers to perform more pro bono work in Illinois and given a welcome boost to Illinois's legal services organizations. The rule change is effective July 1, 2008.

In 2006, the court amended SCR 756 to require all attorneys to report whether and to what extent they have represented litigants on a pro bono basis or supported organizations that provide pro bono representation to lower income litigants during the preceding year.
