Stepping up the fight against elder abuse: a leading elder-rights advocate says the Illinois Legislature and judiciary can do more to prevent and identify elder abuse.

Judge Patrick T. Murphy of the Circuit Court of Cook County has long focused on the problem of elder abuse. At the time of Murphy's 2003 retirement from the office of Public Guardian for Cook County, a position he held for a quarter of a century, approximately one-third of that office's incoming cases involved elderly people who had been financially exploited, he says.

Murphy proposes that the legislature and judiciary adopt further measures to combat such abuse in his article, The growing epidemic of elder abuse: Recommendations for proactive judicial solutions, which appeared in the May 2008 issue of ISBA's Elder Law Section newsletter.
