During a recent divorce seminar in which I participated, one of the attendees wrote as follows on the evaluation: "I learned I have to get clients with more money to better prepare for trial." This person also suggested a topic: "How to get the clients with real money." I was reminded of several things I heard other lawyers say as I was developing my career. In the early 60s, Bob Leali, a senior partner of mine and a great litigator, was hired in a paternity case. (They were called "bastardy" proceedings back then.) He prepared for the case by reading every published Illinois paternity opinion. When he was finished he was a true expert in paternity law.
