PROVIDENCE, R.I. _ Considering the seedings, the first half of Thursday's Massachusetts-Central Florida NCAA Tournament game seemed fair.

UMass is the top seed in the Eastern regional, the top-ranked team in the country. Central Florida is the 16th seed, one of only two teams in the tournament with a losing record.

So, for a half, Massachusetts did not do everything it usually does. It pretty much played only half a game. It was fine on offense, but it did not play much defense, certainly not the kind that has become its trademark. The Golden Knights, on the other hand, did everything they could and did it pretty well.
