Swinney picks up jobs mantle.

SCOTLAND'S finance minister John Swinney made a special visit to Hawick on Wednesday night to hold talks with Pringle bosses.

The government chief had taken a detour from a previous engagement in Kelso to attend a private meeting at Glebe Mill with three members of the Pringle management, in a bid to prevent the loss of 80 jobs at the mill.

And during a later meeting in the town hall chambers with local councillors, MSPs and union officials - which was scheduled to last 30 minutes but ran to an hour-and-a-half - the SNP minister pledged support for Hawick, and has vowed to return later this year.
