A POPULAR tea bar has served its last cuppa after nearly 40 years of service.
The WRVS volunteer-run tea bar, based in the diagnostic wing of South Tyneside District Hospital, has been taken over by the hospital because its own cafe is under renovation for the next six months.
But the change of hands has left 43 volunteers upset at its closure, and complaining of not having anything to do any more.
However, hospital chiefs today defended their decision, claiming the switch - which means hospital staff will take over from the volunteers - will offer patients a better service during the reconstruction period of Alexander's Cafe, in the Ingham Wing ...
