Five private equity funds (PE) have been short listed after the first round of bidding for the mobile phone business of Huawei Technologies (Huawei), among which Bain Capital is seen as having the best chance to win out.
Huawei has cooperated with Bain before, having jointly sought at the end of last year to acquire 3Com, a US telecoms equipment producer. That opportunity came to naught when the US administration turned against the deal in the name of national security.
Huawei hopes to enter the US market and reduce the risks in the competition with Nokia and Samsung by selling its mobile equipment business to a PE.
