In 1972, the vice presidential candidate, Missouri Senator Thomas Eagleton, was forced to withdraw from the Democratic party ticket because he had acknowledged that he suffered from depression. The 42-year-old Navy veteran and Harvard Law School graduate admitted to having gone to counseling and receiving electroconvulsive treatments for his depression. Even today, for many men the stigma attached to mental health struggles continues to deter them from seeking help for emotional problems. Many men believe that admitting to vulnerability, especially psychological, is anathema to what it means to be a "real man."
