SHETTLESTON is about to have its 15 minutes of fame, as the by-electioncircus descends upon Glasgow East. Most of the main parties now have candidatesin place. This by-election will be a microcosm of Scottish and UK politics atthe moment: confused, unpredictable and resentful.
If ever anywhere in Britain deserved the title 'Labour heartland', this is it.A 22 per cent swing would be required to wrest Glasgow East from Labour. Thefact that the pundits are reluctant to call it says it all about Labour'scurrent crisis. The startling thing is that we should be entertaining even theremotest notion that it might lose.
