Top state and city officials pushing residents to use energy-efficient light bulbs may have forgotten to tell consumers one important thing: They're slightly toxic.
The bulbs - spiral-shaped, compact and fluorescent - last longer and use about 70 percent less energy, saving consumers $30 over the life the bulb and helping cut back on electricity usage.
The bulbs, however, contain small amounts of mercury that can be hazardous to the environment if not disposed of correctly.
The bulbs should be brought to city or town hazardous waste sites on disposal days, similar to how paints and televisions are handled.
