1967-1984
1967: Sam Schulman and Eugene Klein buy the Sonics for $1.75 million.
1969: The Sonics name former St. Louis Hawks star Lenny Wilkens as playercoach.
1970: Defying a ruling from NBA commissioner Walter Kennedy, Schulman signs ABA star Spencer Haywood away from the Denver Rockets. Haywood becomes the club's first superstar.
1971: The Sonics use their No. 1 pick in the draft on Fred Brown of Iowa.
1973: Under siege by team stockholders for personnel moves and mounting red ink, Schulman hires Bill Russell, at the top salary paid to any NBA executive, to run the franchise as coach and general manager.
