For more than 10 years, Nutrition Facts panels have appeared on almost every food in the grocery store. But when we eat out, it's a crap shoot. And that hurts us. Americans eat about a third of their calories away from home, and those calories are in some measure responsible for the obesity and diabetes epidemics.

But some cities are taking on the restaurants:

* New York. In December 2006, New York City became the first jurisdiction to order some restaurants to post calories on menus and menu boards.
