The title of Deming Brown's book promises a study which would fill a gap in the writing of literary histories and surveys of contemporary Russian literature. It is indeed a very informed study of the prose published in the last sixteen years of Soviet Russian Literature, written with Brown's precise judgement of the merit and place in literary history, even prospective, of the writers and works concerned.
However, the volume is described in the preface as a continuation of his 1978 Soviet Russian Literature since Stalin. Brown's approach to the present volume seems restricted by an apparent desire to follow the pattern of his previous study. Thus, for example, the ...
