The title of Deming Brown's book promises a study which would fill a gap in the writing of literary histories and surveys of contemporary Russian literature. It is indeed a very informed study of the prose published in the last sixteen years of Soviet Russian Literature, written with Brown's precise judgement of the merit and place in literary history, even prospective, of the writers and works concerned.
