Clocking in at a little more than a half-hour, "Modern Guilt," Beck's wisp of an album, seems to be over just as it begins. Produced with Danger Mouse (half of the duo Gnarls Barkley), it delves into a 1960s pop sound that's part Phil Spector and part Jefferson Airplane.
Simple, distorted guitar lines play like motorcycle engines over a gravel road of snare drum. Structurally, the pared-down sound recalls Beck's folk-influenced efforts- but, as ever with Beck, there is the incongruous interplay of genres and stylish sampled beats.
