I'm just relieved (for more reasons than one) that I'm not a citizen of Japan.

A recent newspaper article indicated that the Japanese government is intent on making it mandatory for certain age level citizens to periodically have their waistline measured. The goal is to keep a male's waistline under 33.5 inches. This is the new state-prescribed limit for waistlines. Obviously the Japanese want to keep them slim and trim.

This would most certainly be an almost unreachable goal for me and millions of other American men. Most of us haven't had that type of waistline since our high school or service days. It's just a ...
