THE ENDURING WAR between the Boy Scouts and the gay rights movement has gone quiet as of late, but a blockbuster case in Philadelphia is bringing it back to the national discussion.

At issue is a parcel of land the local Boy Scouts chapter, the Cradle of Liberty Council, calls home. In 1928 the chapter acquired rights to the city-owned land, where they built their headquarters. In exchange for the tax-free property and a $1 annual lease, the Scouts were responsible for the land's upkeep, with the caveat that the city could revoke the property with at least one year's notice--and a year ago, that happened.
