UNEMPLOYMENT in Kilkenny soared by almost 40 per cent in the past 12 months, far outpacing the national rate of 32.7 per cent.
The number of people in Kilkenny signed on to the Live Register increased by 1,039 people, or 39.9 per cent in the year to June, taking the total to 3,643, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.
This is compared to 2,604 in June 2007.
In June alone, an extra 167 people added their names to the register.
The vast majority of new additions to the Register signed on in Kilkenny, while Thomastown had a small, but noticeable increase from 446 in June 2007 to 584 at the end of last month.
