OMAHA - Michael Phelps loves nights such as the one he savored Friday at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials, when he lowered his world record in the 200-meter individual medley and led the qualifying for the 100 butterfly. The harder the race, the fiercer the competition, the more Phelps gets pumped.
On a night of all-American rivalries, Phelps set his second world record of the meet at Qwest Center, Aaron Peirsol tied Ryan Lochte's world mark in the 200 backstroke and Lochte proved himself one of the grittiest competitors the United States will take to Beijing.
