APPARENTLY, the key to speedway is to maintain control of the bike, with the best riders the ones who can harness all the power in the engine and still keep on the racing line.
The machines are fuelled by methanol for extra speed, giving them acceleration on a par with a Formula One car, but have no brakes, rear suspension or gears, and racers have to 'powerslide' sideways into bends, the rear wheel grabbing the loose surface to ease them round.
