OAKLAND, Calif. -- Jim Riggleman slapped an empty blue paper cup on a table in the Mariners clubhouse after Monday's 4-3 loss to the Oakland A's.
With Felix Hernandez, Carlos Silva, Cesar Jimenez and Adrian Beltre sitting at the tap, Riggleman didn't exactly raise his voice. But he did pronounce his words distinctly.
"We've got to win this one," Riggleman said. "We've got to win."
No one argued with that. The Mariners got a three-run homer from Richie Sexson in the first inning and eight effective innings from Jarrod Washburn.
But the Mariners needed a little bit more, and time and again ...
