JOHNNY Speight's creation Alf Garnett was a TV anti-hero - a larger-than-life figure laughed with and laughed at in equal measure.
But this mould-breaking, alternative sitcom was an ensemble piece, making household names of the fab four cast.
Speight had developed The Arthur Haynes Show with comedian Arthur Haynes playing a belligerent socialist character with an aggressive attitude and big chip on his shoulder.
Garnett was a right-wing variation on a similar theme: an ill-educated, opinionated, loud-mouthed, bad tempered, angry, Tory-voter.
