The 20 countries chosen for this article cover the entire Sub-Saharan region, with the exception of the West African countries and South Africa. Smaller countries with negligible mineral potential - Comoros, Mauritius, Reunion, Seychelles - have been omitted.
What is left is a group of contiguous (Lesotho being the only exception) countries of very varied area, population, geography and mineral endowment. For brevity, throughout this article the region covered by these countries is referred to as `Central Africa'. Although the grouping is arbitrary, some useful insight can be gained in considering the region as a whole.
