The increase in the number of customers defaulting on mortgage repayments could drive the local banking sector to its own subprime crisis, an academic has warned.
Carel van Aardt, the head of income and expenditure research at Unisa's Bureau of Market Research (BMR), said this could happen because South Africans had been given credit on more favourable terms than they qualified for if their full credit histories were known. Van Aardt and his team discovered this in talks they had with banks and credit providers during research conducted by the BMR.
