Hung Liu was born in 1948 in Changchun, the former imperial capital of Manchuria and w4s raised in Beijing. During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, she was sent to the country to work in the fields and to be "reeducated." Hung Liu loved,to paint and secretly did so whenever she could. Eventually, she became an art teacher for the Communist Party, teaching her students how to draw the red flag and other politically correct images. After studying mural painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, Hung Liu emigrated to the United States in 1984 to study at the University of California at San Diego.
