IT IS probably no accident that, in the week that Taiwan's voters set the stamp on their own autonomy, China chose to stamp violently on what little autonomy Hong Kong had hoped for after July 1st 1997, when China takes over the territory from Britain. On March 24th the Preparatory Committee, which oversees the transition on behalf of China, voted to abolish Hong Kong's Legislative Council (Legco). Legco is currently democratically elected and will be replaced by an appointed "provisional" legislature.
