WOMEN who routinely examine their breasts for cancer may be doing moreharm than good, scientists say.

A study has found no evidence that regular self-examination using a settechnique reduces deaths. In fact, women who follow the routine are twice aslikely to have pointless and potentially risky biopsies.

Cancer charities and the Department of Health say they no longer advise womento check their breasts every month using a 'strict and complicated' routine.

Instead, women are urged to be 'breast aware' - being vigilant to changes inthe breast, including lumps or soreness, and reporting these to a doctorwithout delay.
