The Air Force's request to restart domestic production of the F-16 with an order for four aircraft is a "good start," but prime contractor Lockheed Martin says it will need even more planes added by Congress this year to meet a goal of building an additional 120 of the planes for the service.
"At least six is what we need [in FY '97]," Bill Lawrence, manager of the company's F-16 program for the Air Force told Defense Daily in an interview at the company's plant here. "We think 12 is even better."
After announcing that it was stopping domestic production in the fall of 1993, the Air Force asked for four F-16s for $111 million in its FY '97 budget request. ...
