Chanel's Michael Sears is such a gifted salesman he could have sold Coco Chanel one of her own quilted handbags.
"He's a local icon," said Susan Kelley, chief administrator for the Newbury Street League. "I never saw a person with so many friends."
Sears' skill has earned him the Fay Rotenberg Award for Public Service. This is a first for the League, since the award typically goes to business owners - other honorees for 2008 are the Winston family and Steve Kourtidis of Steve's Greek and American restaurants - but the slight, bespectacled salesman was an easy choice, Kelley said.
