Co-opetition. It's what happens when competitors work together on a project, even while they continue to compete in other areas. I coined that term several years ago to describe what I saw as an emerging business trend best evidenced in the computer industry. Since then, it's become a widely accepted term, and the process continues to accelerate.
Co-opetition originally meant an attempt by smaller players in a market to pool resources and develop new, more competitive products. Big players, too, have taken up the game.
