Jul. 17--Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. announced Wednesday morning its plans to acquire Alpha Natural Resources Inc. in a cash and stock deal valued at approximately $10 billion. The largest producer of iron ore pellets in North America, Cleveland-Cliffs operates three mines on the Iron Range -- Northshore Mining Co., United Taconite Co. and Hibbing Taconite Co. Its purchase of Alpha, based in Abingdon, Va., will make Cleveland-Cliffs one of the largest suppliers of Appalachian coal to the steel industry, as well.
