SCARBOROUGH'S Poppy Appeal raised [pounds sterling]39,707 - smashing the national average by nearly [pounds sterling]10,000.
The Poppy Year 2007-2008 ended on May 31 and the new Poppy Year has now begun, as from June 1.
The appeal is organised by the Royal British Legion and the money raised goes towards helping ex-servicemen across the country.
As well as beating the national average, the Scarborough branch of the Legion exceeded last year's total by [pounds sterling]3,500.
