Apr. 3--Thomson Consumer Electronics next year plans to sell a television that will run computer software and surf the Internet and on-line services.
The announcement Tuesday to securities analysts in New York comes as computer and television makers compete for pre-eminence in the home, as technology from both industries converges into an intelligent, hybrid appliance.
Players in both industries independently have been developing TV/PCs, including computer powerhouses Apple, Compaq and Gateway, and television giants Mitsubishi and Thomson.
But, to avoid debacles such as the Beta-VHS formats for VCR, companies in both industries should work now to agree ...
