I thought President Clinton should have walked out on Don Imus's performance at the radio and television correspondents dinner, maybe first getting Newt Gingrich to go with him. By staying put, frozen smile in place, the president probably got the politic s of it right. A walkout could have changed the subject--making Clinton's behavior and not Imus's the issue. We might all be talking about Clinton's thin skin instead of Imus's ghastly jokes.

Still it's hard to imagine other recent presidents putting up with a speech like this. Clinton still doesn't grasp the symbolic importance of the presidency and hasn't really tried to draw an important line against awful ...
