Umpires are fond of saying that theirs is the only profession in which you are expected to start out perfect and then improve as you go along.
Talk about stress. Talk about the need for physical conditioning to serve as a buffer against all that stress.
And that's exactly what baseball should be talking about now in the wake of John McSherry's collapse and death behind home plate.
McSherry was that rarity in sports, an arbiter so respected and so regarded by players and managers that they admitted they were reluctant to argue with him. Talk about high praise.
