WHEN A GUN DOG trainer wrote me from Sacramento, California, saying he trained the humane way, I was delighted. But when he also told me he specialized in flat coat retrievers I was astounded. The only thing rarer than this would be some guy who trained aardvarks to fetch penguins.
So I jumped a plane and flew in to see him. Gun dogs are my life. I've followed the classic retriever field trial circuit as a handler for years, and what farm field haven't I tromped through shooting birds over dogs? But here's the bottom line: In all my life, I've seen only four flat coats.
Now I realize if I'd followed the show circuit, flat coats would have appeared. But I ...
