When fire consumed the Western Dawn, Tom Hoblet's combination seiner, longliner and cod pot boat, a couple of winters ago, he knew he'd rather buy another boat than lease for the remainder of his long fishing year. He picked up the Aleut Kid from the fishing town of King Cove, 53 miles from his home port of False Pass, and finished out his salmon, halibut and cod seasons.
Though its shallow draft makes the Aleut Kid a champ when it comes to beach seining operations in the shallows, Hoblet recently purchased a 54-foot vessel, which should suit him better during the winter pot fishery for cod. With two vessels now on his hands, it ...
