This month's continuing education program is focused on the recognition and prevention of prescription drug misuse and abuse.
The scope of the problem is alarming. Research released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2007 shows that unintentional poisoning deaths involving narcotics and hallucinogens grew 55% between 1999 and 2004. During the same period unintentional deaths from psychotherapeutics increased 84%.
The problem affects many demographics. The most likely abusers are the young, the elderly, women, pain patients, users with comorbid psychiatric conditions and substance abusers. In 2001 the National Community Pharmacists Association ...
