What I'd like to do is make a few comments about the cultural context for the reception of The River Ophelia; to try and locate it in some way as to explicate why terms like 'shocking,' 'scandal,' or the more literary version, 'transgressive' seem to surround the novel, and hopefully open it up for broader discussion.
