Kings and other rulers have seldom restrained their access to the riches and treasures within their reach, and the Chinese emperors were no exception. The immense collection of the National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan, is largely a tribute to the acquisitiveness of the Qing emperor Qianlong [ILLUSTRATION FOR PLATE IV OMITTED].
