Quite often, the label "first alternate" goes without reward.
And then there are moments like the one Evan Beck had last week.
As the 17-year-old rising senior at Norfolk Academy came off the 18th green at Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club following his fourth-place finish in the Payton Memorial, his dad awaited with some good news.
The "first alternate" label he had carried for nearly three weeks for the U.S. Junior Amateur had been upgraded to "in."
Beck tied for medalist honors - he shot 73-72 for a 1-over-par total - at Hermitage Country just outside Richmond three weeks ago. But he lost a playoff to 16-year-old Wilson Day of Raleigh, ...
