Martin Ebner, whose BK Vision is Union Bank of Switzerland's largest shareholder and a thorn in its side, said he would oppose the election of Robert Studer, currently chief executive, as chairman at the bank's AGM later this month.
Two hug bank mergers came into force. Bank of Tokyo and Mitsubishi Bank united to form Tokyo Mitsubishi Bank, the world's biggest, with Yen 75 trillion ($700 billion) of assets; and the merger of Chase Manhatten with Chemical Banking creates America's biggest bank (Chase Manhattan) with assets of $304 billion.
