BERWICK Borough Council has effectively ruled that none of its members will be allowed to be leader and mayor at the same time.
The decision has been made in recognition of the heavy workload for one person carrying out both roles, as Coun Tony Hughes of Seahouses discovered last year.
He said: "Having done the job as leader and mayor last year, I can tell you it's an extremely difficult year with a lot of pressure so for that reason doing both should be prohibited.
"At times the workload was just unbelievable."
The decision should also bring an end to accusations of a conflict of interest between the non-political mayor and a leader ...
