ROADSIDE signs promoting Conundrum Farm's cafe have been obliterated with black paint by Berwick Borough Council.
Tenant farmer Nigel Dudgeon thought vandals had been at work when he spotted the damage only for closer inspection to reveal the signs had been blacked out by council enforcement officers.
It was the culmination of a dispute between the farmer and council, which had ordered him to remove the signs after they were put up in fields close to the A1 without planning permission. The council has admitted taking the unusual enforcement action, saying the signs were illegal and had been 'obliterated' to prevent them being used again.
