LIKE the lion in the Wizard of Oz, the Labour party has at long last found some courage. Days before an important and high-profile by-election, it has announced its intention to do something it should have done right back in 1997.
It is, or at least it says it is, going to reform the benefits system, with the express intention of getting the longterm unemployed back into work; of stopping up the scandalous black hole into which disability benefit is merrily pumped to the tune of [pounds sterling]12billion a year; and of forcing drug addicts to attend treatment centres in exchange for weekly handouts.
