Jesus once rebuked him as Satan, yet entrusted him with the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. What kind of man could elicit such responses? Protestant and Catholic scholars generally concur that the apostle Peter enjoyed a special closeness to Jesus and that he was preeminent among the apostles. But Peter's character and his doctrinal role elude further consensus. To Catholics, he is the founder of the Roman Church and its first bishop; to Protestants, his person is secondary to his confession of faith that Jesus was the Messiah.
