Standing at the bottom of Skinner Butte's columns and gazing up the seemingly sheer face of basalt rocks jutting skyward, it almost seems impossible to climb. Yet people scurried up and over, finding handholds where there appeared to be none, gripping the smallest crevices with their toes.

The city of Eugene's River House, an outdoor program, offers several climbing opportunities, but the Community Climb is open to anyone, regardless of experience, and provides all the equipment needed to try scaling the columns for a $10 fee per climber.
