Until recently, Americans have been largely shielded from the sinister efficiency of the millions of land mines that are scattered across--and render unusable--huge swatches of territory in more than 60 countries.

And then the United States sent soldiers to Bosnia, where 3 million to 6 million of these hidden killers are lying in wait for the peacekeeping forces. Three U.S. soldiers have so far been wounded by the mines, said to sell for between $3 and $30.

Suddenly, U.S. politicians, military leaders and diplomats are coming to their senses. Finally, there seems to be a more concerted political effort to end the manufacture and use of these indiscriminated ...
